Pipe Repairs: Fresh Water HDPE Pipe

As a London based Mechanical Services company, our services were required to work on a pipe repair project for a HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) pipe within a Quarry in Essex.

While HDPE pipes are robust, inadequate installation practices can compromise their integrity, leading to leaks. Proper installation, including correct alignment, support, and handling, is crucial. These best practises will ensure the long-term reliability of an HDPE water supply system.

Site Location – Wennington Quarry, Rainham, Essex

Mechanical Services Contractor Supplied –

The project was to carry out repairs to a 225mm fresh water HDPE pipe from pontoon to wash machine. Including installing a Tee section with blank cap to allow for an outlet to release water.

Firstly, to carry out this project our engineers isolated supply side of pipework, via isolation balloon which was inflated within the section of pipe.

A generator was used to power an Electrofusion welding of HDPE pipes and fittings together, to create a strong, seamless bond. The pipework was then cut back and cleaned, ready to accept electrofusion coupling and fit on tee section of pipework.

After this, the team cut back and joined another section of delivery pipe and fusion weld upstand, on to tee section ready to remove inflated isolation balloon.

Lastly, once the isolation balloon was removed, we fitted a red cap end to upstand of tee section. Then pipe repairs were all complete.

In conclusion

There was minimal disruption to services. There is now pipework with an outlet for the water to be released.

The site was left clean and tidy and cleared of all redundant pipework and other items which were disposed of at a licensed refuse/recycling facility.
